About us...
Shelter and Sustainable Environment are the basic needs for all living beings. Civil Engineering takes the pride of providing these basic needs and hence called as the “Mother of all Engineering”. Civil Engineering is the backbone for almost all the infrastructure development. A country’s development is based on infrastructural facilities like buildings, basic amenities, transportation, Communication and IT enabled services. Civil Engineers play a key role in developing and maintaining these systems. The rising competition and increase in population leads to the necessity of sophisticated transport systems, high rise buildings, energy efficient systems etc. Hence a Civil Engineer has to equip himself with innovative thinking, modern technology and problem solving skills by keeping in mind the environmental sustainability. We the Department of Civil Engineering at Velammal College of Engineering and Technology prepare our graduates to cater the needs of stakeholder at par with the growing challenges of the society.
The Civil Engineering department was established in the year 2011 and it offers one UG course in B.E. Civil Engineering. The program offers Anna University curriculum and value added courses in order to prepare the students as industry-ready products. The department of Civil Engineering is headed by Dr.L.Andal, having more than two decades experience and proficiency in the field of Structural and Environmental Engineering. The department is having well experienced faculty members in various domains of Civil Engineering.
The department is equipped with the state of art laboratories such as Fluid Mechanics and Machinery Lab, Soil Mechanics Lab, Strength of Materials Lab, Survey Lab, Concrete and Highway Lab, Environmental Engineering Lab and CADD Lab with a total investment of Rs.61 lakhs. Exclusive models are set-up in the laboratories to enhance the understanding of the students and motivate them to learn more. The department has organized various CSIR sponsored seminars and has received DST project grant worth Rs. 76.59 Lakhs. Many of our students have participated in various national project contests and paper presentations and have received many accolades. The department regularly organizes guest lectures, seminars and workshops to make the students to be aware of the present day technologies. The department also promotes the leadership and organizing skills by conducting events like State level paper presentation contest, “CENTAC”. The students were groomed with social centered developments and some of our students were actively participated in the Swachh Bharath mission of constructing low cost toilet at Panaiyur Village. The department also takes personal care of the students along with the parents through counseling to develop the student as a holistic person and a responsible Engineer to the society.
The Department has got 28 university ranks. The graduates of Civil Engineering have been placed in various companies like CTS, WIPRO, INFOSYS and core companies like URC Constructions, Sobha Developers Bangalore, Unikans Builders and Promoters,etc . Also gate secured graduates are doing their higher studies in our country and abroad.
